New City Catechism Q&A 2

Question 2: What is God? God is the creator of everyone and everything.

Psalm 86 says, “There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours…But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.” Last week, our Kids were introduced to the truth that God is our only hope in life and death, and this week we get to define what God is – who is this Person that is our only hope?! God is the creator and sustainer of everyone and everything. He is eternal, infinite, and unchangeable in his power and perfection, goodness and glory, wisdom, justice, and truth. Nothing happens except through him and by his will.

The People Rebuilt the Temple (Ezra 2-6)

Bible Story Summary: God’s people were rebuilding the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem. They laid the foundation and praised God. Sometimes the people stopped building when they felt discouraged or afraid. King Darius gave the people what they needed, and they finished God’s temple.

Big Picture Q&A: Can God be trusted? Yes, God cannot lie or ever be wrong, so we can trust whatever He has said.

Christ Connection: God’s people rebuilt the temple so they would have a place to worship God. Years later, God sent His Son, Jesus, to be with His people. Now, God does not dwell with His people through the temple. Instead, God dwells directly with His people through His Spirit. Jesus provided something better than the temple; He gives us Himself.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • What was the first thing the priests did as they began to rebuild God’s temple?

  • Why were some of the people sad when the temple was being rebuilt?

Family Activity: Ask your church if there are any cleaning, maintenance, or beautification projects that your family can complete for the church. Remind kids that the church is not specifically where God dwells, but it is a place where we worship Him with other believers.

WRL 3-5 Year Olds
God to the Rescue

Pg. 84-91 | Exodus 3-13 | Video

Introduction: Israel had fallen into slavery under the Egyptians. God worked through Moses to rescue His people. In this, God displayed His power so that both the Egyptians and Hebrews would know that He was God. The Israelites’ firstborn sons were saved through the blood of the lamb and they were able to escape Egypt. While the lamb saved them physically, Jesus is a greater “lamb” who offers eternal salvation.

Big Truth: God sent a Savior

Our hearts are broken and our world is broken. Because we can’t fix things, we need a Savior to make things right and restore relationships. Thankfully, God sent Jesus and the victory over sin and death is already won!

Activity: Sing “My God is so Big”. Explain that God is powerful and He used His power to rescue us, and to raise Jesus from the dead!

WRL 2 Year Olds
Moses and the Very Big Rescue

After being slaves in Egypt for years, God rose up a leader, Moses, to lead His people out of Egypt to the Promised Land. Moses told Pharaoh to let God’s people go 9 times, and finally, on the 10th time, Pharaoh let them go. As they were leaving Egypt, Pharaoh changed his mind and chased after God’s people, but by God’s power, Moses was able to part the sea and the Israelites escaped to safety. Moses and the rest of God’s people praised God for His great rescue!

Play: Make different instruments and sing, dance, and celebrate as a family all God has done for you! Keep the spirit of Thanksgiving going in the coming week.

Big Theology for Little Hearts: Creation

Our lesson for Sunday was “God made people,” and we read CREATION by Devon Provencher. This book presents words and phrases that relate to creation: out of nothing, garden, image of God, rest, marriage, roles, be fruitful, good, fall, and new creation. From these pages, our Littles are learning foundational truths about God’s world.

WRL Babies
Jesus grew like me.

This week’s lesson for our babies is “Jesus grew like me.” When you attend a 1 year old’s birthday party, you often see a string of photos showing how they have grown from newborn to 12 months old. We can clearly see how the child has grown. Just like our babies, Jesus grew in his first year. As well as his second, third, and so on. Remind your child that Jesus is both fully God and fully human. As a human, he grew up just like they are. Have fun with it and show your baby photos of you growing up!
